The ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems is the premier international conference of Human-Computer Interaction. CHI – pronounced ‘kai’ – is a place where researchers and practitioners gather from across the world to discuss the latest in interactive technology. We are a multicultural community from highly diverse backgrounds who together investigate and design new and creative ways for people to interact using technology.” (CHI Conference 2020 Homepage)

Challenge

Drawing inspiration from leading graphic and interaction designer EDDIE OPARA—see here for more about him and his work—we redesigned the CHI Conference 2020 logo to express the modern, digital, and ever evolving nature of the HCI (Human Computer Interaction) field.

Final design

Ideation

We were first drawn to human computer interaction at its most basic: 1s and 0s. Ultimately, we landed on the use of isometrics and simple geometric shapes to create a feeling of both the past and the future, a design that was both digitally nostalgic while also familiarly modern.
